Lake Charles, LA
McNeese State University
Hardtner Hall
Stokes Auditorium

Course overview

The thought of cancer brings fear and anxiety to our clients.  A knowledgeable and skilled therapist does much to bring comfort by administering client-centered treatments.  People living with cancer can benefit greatly from receiving massage. The American Cancer Society advocates massage to comfort and help improve the quality of life for patients with cancer. Cancer may be a reason to begin, continue, or increase the frequency of massage treatments. Because the amount of stress involved in dealing with a life-threatening disease is enormous, massage can play a vital role in stress reduction. Cancer treatments are enormously taxing to the body and massage can help minimize some of their unpleasant side effects.

This workshop will help bring a new understanding of cancer, its causes and progression, as well as its treatments.  Emphasis is placed on the client intake and how to procure medical clearance.  Treatment guidelines and how to modify massage based on the clients presenting symptoms will featured.

During this course, you will

  1. Explore cancer, types of tumors, tumor nomenclature, metastasis, tumor staging and grading, causes and risk factors, sign and symptoms, cancer treatments and common side effects,
  2. Learn how massage is used, how the intake is modified for persons with cancer, general and specific treatment guidelines
  3. Review research related to massage and cancer.
  4. Discuss specific cancer types: breast cancer, cancers of the digestive system (oral/pharyngeal cancers, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer), cancers of the urogenital tract (kidney cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer), gynecologic cancers (uterine cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, hematologic and lymphoid cancers (leukemias, multiple myeloma, lymphoma [Hodgkin, non-Hodgkin lymphoma]), bone cancers, brain tumors, lung cancer, skin cancers (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma, thyroid cancer and laryngeal cancer.
