Massage Therapy for Cancer Patients - A Homestudy Course
Overview
People living with cancer can benefit greatly from receiving massage. The American Cancer Society advocates massage to comfort and to help improve the quality of life for cancer patients, although not to specifically treat cancer.
Cancer treatments are enormously taxing to the body. Some of the side effects of these treatments can result in anxiety, anger, depression and negative body image for the cancer patient. A massage therapist with special training can play a major role in integrating client body, mind, and spirit, reduce muscle tension and decrease pain, by administering client-centered treatments.
In this course you will learn:
- The types of cancer and neoplasia and their causes.
- The current medical treatments for cancer including radiation, chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants, & surgery.
- General guidelines for massage therapists for working with cancer patients.
- Resources for continued research.
- Your level of comprehension through formal testing.
Course Materials
- Textbook - Mosby's Pathology for Massage Therapists by Salvo and Anderson. Elsevier Mosby, 2004 - 397 pages.
- Workbook - includes instructions for completing your Homestudy Course, an answer sheet, and an open-book Final Examination composed of 50 multiple choice questions.
